Sporfishing in Costa Rica

Sport fishing

Costa Rica’s small territory offers easy access to both the Pacific and the Atlantic coast. Having two shores offers more fishing spots and a greater variety of species to fish.

The Pacific coast has incredible fishing for Sailfish, Tuna, Marlin, Dorado and more, but if you wish to fish something a little bit different you can also go to the Atlantic coast for some Big Tarpon and Big Snook fishing.

Costa Rica’s fine sport fishing has enabled it to host many international sport fishing tournaments. Come experience for yourself unbelievable off shore and in shore fishing experiences.

Valle Dorado Tours offers great fishing options with large and comfortable fishing boats, professional and experienced crews and all the fishing equipment like rods and lures.

Seasons

There is good fishing in Costa Rica year round. Sailfish, roosterfish, marlin and over 15 other varieties can be captured any month. However, the following species are more prevalent during the following seasons:

Sailfish: April to September, most fish between 90 and 110 lbs.

Black Marlin: April to August with a peak on May for two weeks. Most fish between 300 and 400 lbs.

Blue and Stripped Marlin: December to March. Blues run from 200 to 300 lbs. and fish stripped usually 120 to 175 lbs.

Mahi Mahi (Dorado): Spring to late fall. Fish run between 5 and 50 lbs.

Yellow Fin Tuna: May thru November. Tuna most commonly are in the 10 to 20 lbs. range with the larger 50 lbs to 150 pounders occasionally caught off shore.

Preservation

We strongly believe in the preservation of our fishing resources and encourage all bill fish and non-eating fish to be realized. We ask the cooperation and participation of our fishing guests to aid our efforts to preserve these magnificent marine creatures. We work only with responsible fishing suppliers to ensure the lowest impact possible in the endangered fish populations and the environment. We ask of our clients to help us denounce any anomalies and avoid eating endangered species in restaurants.
