Set in a remote area of Costa Rica near the Nicaraguan border, the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is difficult to visit independently. Tours operate along the Frio River next to Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. Tours never actually go into the Refuge, but this river and its little canals offer a perfect opportunity to see birds, reptiles, mammals and amphibians.
During the rainy season from July to November millions of birds arrive here and the area becomes a wintering site for migrating birds. This makes it the perfect place if you are looking to take some good pictures and experience spotting and learning about birds.
Caimans, monkeys and bats are other commonly seen animals. Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is located driving distance from Arenal Volcano, which makes it great option to take a one day tour and enjoy the rich flora and fauna of this area.
