Cloud forests around the world cover an insignificant 1% of the global woodland. This fact shows how rare the cloud forests are and Costa Rica offers a perfectly preserved cloud forest just a few hours’ drive from San Jose.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was established in 1972 and covers over 35.000 acres. Over 100 species of mammals, 400 species of birds and 1.400 species of amphibians and reptiles are just some numbers that prove Monteverde to be an ideal destination for nature lovers and one of Costa Rica’s most visited areas.
There’s also the adjacent Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve which is an initiative of the town community and a great example of costarican people green conscience. This reserve has a big resemblance to Monteverde Reserve thus its location.
Activities in Monteverde and Santa Elena include nature trails, hiking, hanging bridges, canopy and scenic views of the Arenal Volcano.
