Costa Rica is a country rich in flora. Although Costa Rica covers only a 0.3% of Earth’s surface, it has over 5% of the planet’s biodiversity. Costa Rica protects over 25% of its territory, making it one of the largest National Park Systems in the world.
9.000 species of “higher plants”, over 800 species of ferns, over 30 species of heliconias. Costa Rica is home to over 11.400 species of plants; of which over 9.000 are flowering and over 1.300 are orchids. These facts prove that our country is the perfect destination for green tourists.

Orchids
Orchids like the one shown above are very common in Costa Rica. The “Guaria Morada” is an orchid type and it is Costa Rica’s national flower.
Heliconias
Heliconias are the most common flowering plant in Costa Rica. There are over 30 species of heliconias.
Ferns
The “resurrection fern” is one of the most remarkable among the great variety in Costa Rica. It withers and turns brown during low precipitation periods. When rain is sufficient it turns green again.
Bromeliads Its tightly wrapped leaves function as water, insect and leaf detritus reservoirs. It ingests nutrients from the resulting stew.
Costa Rican Trees
Among the most remarkable tress is the “Ceiba” tree. This tree stands more than 20 stories tall. The “Corteza Amarilla” tree embellishes Costa Rica landscapes.

Costa Rica is home to over 850 bird species, which is more than you can find in United States, Canada and Mexico combined. This explains why it is considered a bird watching paradise. The country is also home to over 200 species of mammals, more than 380 kinds of reptiles and amphibians, about 2.000 species of butterflies and over 100 species of fresh water fish.

Underwater Life
Costa Rica is a world known diving paradise. Several diving spots offer an unforgettable experience. Coco’s Island National Park is considered among the best diving spots in the world with a great underwater life. Sea turtles, humpback whales and hammerhead shark are some examples.
Costa Rica Birds
Hummingbirds, Scarlet Macaws, Toucans, Oropendolas and Quetzals are just a few examples of our countries bird watching potential. If you like bird watching just pack your camera and your binoculars and come experience Costa Rica.
Jaguar
The largest carnivore in Costa Rica. Although it is a very difficult species to see Costa Rica is known to have a very big jaguar population.
Sloth
Named after its sluggish movement rate. This mammal’s leaf diet generates very little energy, which explains why they only move if necessary and come down the tree top only to defecate.
Poison Dart Frog
This little brilliantly colored frog resides on the top of the rainforest. It secretes a poison that resembles sweat. There are many little frogs colored in different exuberant colors.
Howler Monkeys
The black howler monkey is the most common of all 4 monkey types in Costa Rica. They are always remembered by the tourists for their powerful roars and howls.
